Letters from local and national politicians reflect the reconstruction polities and attitudes of the Republican Party with several letters specifically discussing problems in Savannah, Georgia. Five letters from William B. Lynn discuss the 1868 election in New York state. Illinois politics are discussed in a number of letters. Yates letters (33 items) to Strong mainly discuss routine matters, with one letter, May 1873, giving a disillusioned warning about patronage. Material from the post office (150 items) includes quarterly reports, audits and a number of letters from Strong's assistant that give a glimpse of the intrigue involved in political appointments. Family letters(33 items) include many from his brother a lawyer in St. Joseph, Missouri.
